Cinzia Farina: Carrozza 9 (2026)

Basta guardarci dentro.

Possible/Impossible Worlds

If we can think of/imagine the impossible... the impossible is within us, inscribed in our nature as human beings. Indeed, in nature itself: in the three codified kingdoms – animal, plant, mineral – where the clue lies in the existence of the exception, the deviation from “normality,” of that which would not be possible but is, and remains inexplicable.
So deeply inscribed, so deeply rooted in our nature, that in the end the impossible is within ourselves.
We need only look within. Is it in the other “me” in the mirror, or is it beyond the mirror?
The impossible – the possibility of the impossible – undermines the possible, the real as it
appears to us. It is its intimate, central contradiction that shatters the idea of a Whole that encompasses both the possible and the impossible.

The impossible as a rupture in the possible, as a deviation from every regular prediction and vision.

Montale’s “maglia rotta (broken link)” “l'anello che non tiene (the ring that doesn’t hold)”.
A fragile diaphragm separates the possible from the impossible. Maya’s veil. And it takes a seer’s eye to see the other side of the moon. An eye that opens suddenly, in fragments of an instant.

The impossible, after all, has/creates/imposes only questions. Is this the only possible world we inhabit? Or are there many possible worlds that intertwine, brush against one another, and sometimes collide? Strings, sliding doors… Borges’s “paths that fork endlessly”...

All of this is in my book “Carrozza 9”. The rips in the weave of that fabric – strong yet fragile at the same time – that is gauze/veil; suggestions of DNA; empty circles like eyes, like a multiplication of gazes toward the unknown, or toward the final circle, which is a mirror. There are the primary colors – blue, yellow, red – in their transparency, the origin of every possible and impossible creation and variation. There is the illegible writing, as a possible and impossible form of language and communication.

The title refers to a train and therefore alludes to a journey – a journey toward impossible worlds. The nameplate “Carriage 9”, which I had been keeping for reasons unknown since time immemorial, suddenly turned up and struck me as a sign, a perfect resonance. The number 9, the number of completion, represents the dissolution of certainties a death that leads to a new birth. Then there’s esoteric Turin… and the Railway Depot, where the old ends so that the new may begin…
